I came across this site looking for an Avalon Bakery phone number. I've enjoyed browsing and remembering my days of living in the Corridor (1989-1997). I don't have any pictures of either, but it seems like the 404 should be recollected here (I think it was next door to the Willis Gallery) and also the Red Door. Remember those? |

I remember the Red Door as a place where my husband(at the time) Ralph Novallo got beat up by skinheads at 3 in the morning. I had to jump on one guy's back, screaming to keep them from killing him. As I drove the getaway car, these assholes sprayed mace in Ralph's face....good times. We were with Rico Berry who was inside and missed the whole thing. |

Hey Diana...isn't it nice how the Cass Corridor is now "Midtown," and none of that scary kind of visceral stuff happens anymore, to any of the nice white people that garden, own nice condos, buy designer breads from Avalon, and make up the "community" known as "Midtown"?
I'll take a blatantly racist, pathologically violent skinhead, over any of the malignant, hip, "liberal," insidious white motherfuckers that make up "Midtown," in a second. At least with the former you know what to expect, and can act and/or react accordingly. With the latter--the hip, liberal, allegedly progressively minded white nosferatus that increasingly plague the Cass Corridor as it is destroyed--they are the kind of white people that do the most damage.
The violent and systematic sterilization of the Cass Corridor--to make things "safe" and "clean" enough for the plague of hip, white liberal gardeners and condo owners of "Midtown"--is an infuriating and disheartening manifestation of an INFINITELY worse, more powerful, institutionalized, farther-reaching, and insidious kind of racism, than any of the random and--for the most part--ineffectual damage a sparse population of skinheads could ever hope to cause... |
